How to remove silence from a video
- Add your video. Click Upload in the editor above and pick a talking video, such as a vlog, tutorial, podcast clip or presentation. The pause tool opens by itself.
- Look at the preview. The strip shows the sound of your clip. The parts shaded red are the pauses that will be cut. A summary tells you how many seconds will go and how long the clip will be afterwards.
- Adjust the settings. Move the sliders and the preview updates straight away. Nothing is cut yet.
- Click Remove pauses. The clip is split into parts with the pauses taken out, as clean jump cuts.
- Export. Click Export to save an MP4 with no watermark, up to 4K.
The three settings
Silence level
How quiet a moment has to be, compared with the loudest part of the clip, to count as silence. Raise it if breathing or room noise stops pauses from being found. Lower it if quiet words are being marked red.
Shortest pause
Only pauses longer than this are cut. Around 0.3 seconds gives the fast, punchy style of YouTube and TikTok. One second or more removes only long gaps and keeps a natural rhythm.
Keep around speech
A small cushion kept before and after each sentence, so the first and last sounds of words are never clipped. About 0.1 seconds sounds natural.
Why cut the pauses?
Viewers decide in seconds whether to keep watching. Long pauses, "umm" gaps and slow starts are where they leave. Jump cuts keep the energy up and make a ten-minute recording feel tight, without re-recording anything. Cutting pauses by hand on a long video takes ages; this does it in seconds, and you still choose exactly what goes.
Frequently asked questions
Is the silence remover free?
Yes. Snipply is free, adds no watermark and needs no account.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Snipply measures the sound and makes the cuts inside your browser. Your video never leaves your device.
Can I undo the cuts?
Yes. Press Undo (Ctrl+Z) and the clip comes back in one piece. The cuts are also just normal clips on the timeline, so you can drag their edges to bring back any part.
What do the three settings do?
Silence level decides how quiet a moment must be to count as a pause. Shortest pause sets how long a quiet moment must last before it is cut. Keep around speech leaves a little room before and after each sentence so words are not clipped.
Does it work with music in the background?
It works best on clean speech. With loud background music, raise the silence level until the preview marks only the real pauses in red.
